'Do you miss the future?.... there is nothing that marks out 21st Century culture as belonging to the the 21st Century.'

The Orchid and The Wasp is a new piece for myself (electronics/guitar) and Mark Sanders (drums/percussion)
It was created in-residence at Chapel FM in Leeds and is inspired by the writing of Gilles Deleuze, Felix Guattari and Mark Fisher.
While the piece was in development I collaborated with the photographer Ruby Gaunt who created these beautiful images as her own interpretation of the concepts behind the piece.
Ruby explains, "I wanted to reflect the experimental nature of the project in the way that I produced the photographs, focusing on the process rather than the outcome.
By ‘destroying’ the unexposed film rolls, I added an element of unpredictability to the final outcome of the shoot, allowing the images to come together as organically as possible and making the most of the chance occurrences caused by the alteration to the film."

'Chris Sharkey and virtuoso drummer Mark Sanders presented a special commission, The Orchid and the Wasp. With Sharkey playing guitar, computer, keyboard and an array of electronic gadgetry while the hyperactive Sanders played a collection of assorted metal and wooden objects as well as his drum kit, this was dense, complex and thoroughly compelling music and the festival (Gateshead International Jazz Festival) is to be congratulated for staging it.'
